Partnership will help California Paralegals meet new MCLE requirement SEATTLE, WA. and LOS ANGELES, CA. February 25, 2002 - Taecan.com, Inc, the worlds largest aggregator of Online mandatory continuing legal education, announced today that it has formed a strategic alliance with the California Alliance of Paralegal Associations ( CAPA), the largest paralegal organization in California, to deliver online MCLE to all paralegals in California. New State Law requires California Paralegals to take MCLE Until recently, anyone could call himself or herself a paralegal in the state of California, but that is no longer the case. Business & Professions Code §6450 has established strict new rules regulating the use of the titles “ Paralegal” and “Legal Assistant”. The new law has also added, for the first time, mandatory continuing legal education (MCLE) requirements for California paralegals. Effective immediately, in addition to meeting other requirements in the statute, persons using the term “ Paralegal” or “Legal Assistant” in describing their services, must now take a minimum of 8 hours of MCLE. (4 hours of General education every 2 years and 4 hours of Ethics every 3 years). Most paralegals are very busy professionals with significant work and family commitments. To assist them in meeting the new requirements, Taecan.com and CAPA have joined together to offer ready access to MCLE courses online. Although all paralegals may access Taecan.com courses, by special agreement, CAPA members will receive a discount on Taecan MCLE courses. "By partnering with Taecan.com to make quality MCLE available online in a convenient and affordable way for CAPA members and nonmembers, we have taken a positive step in raising the standard of practice for paralegals in California." Stacey Hunt,
CLA, CAS As many professions become more specialized, mandatory continuing professional education is becoming more common in all regulated professions. The delivery of MCLE to paralegals online is a convenience being adapted widely across all professional lines. "Partnering with CAPA is a natural extension of Taecan.com’s growing online MCLE library. Not only will California paralegals have access to the large State Bar Online library, but they will also have access to the online CLE libraries of more than 22 other counties, states and CLE providers currently partnering with Taecan.com. This alliance immediately makes a huge resource available to the California paralegal community." Patrick Vane About the California Alliance of Paralegals (CAPA) Composed of 13 paralegal associations with 3000 members throughout the state of California, CAPA is dedicated to the advancement of the paralegal profession.
